Ezeiza runway works: 18 days on one short strip

Ezeiza will operate on one 1,850-meter runway from October 25 to November 11, 2026, while its secondary strip is rebuilt. Lufthansa Group will cancel its Frankfurt flights; more carriers are reported to follow.

One runway, 1,850 meters, and an airport that stays open

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, traffic at Ministro Pistarini International Airport — Ezeiza — is scheduled to move entirely onto runway 11-29, cut to 1,850 meters from the usual 3,300, and to stay there until Wednesday, November 11. The trigger is the rehabilitation of secondary runway 17-35 and its intersection with the main strip, part of the Ezeiza runway works run by the concessionaire Aeropuertos Argentina (ACI-LAC).

Nothing in that plan involves a shutdown. The airport remains open for the full 18 days, but with roughly 1,450 meters less runway than airlines normally have. That deficit, rather than the construction itself, is what reaches travelers as cancellations, aircraft swaps and refueling stops.

The scale being squeezed is considerable. Ezeiza handled 12 million passengers in 2025, 5.10% more than in 2024, and hosts 31 airlines offering direct flights to 55 international and 35 domestic destinations from a site 23 km from Buenos Aires (ACI-LAC).

Why 1,450 meters decide whether a widebody leaves the ground

An aircraft needs a longer roll when it is heavy, and intercontinental departures are the heaviest of all: fuel for many hours of flight is loaded before takeoff. At 1,850 meters, the available distance falls short of what some long-haul jets need. FTN News notes that the shorter strip limits widebody aircraft precisely because they require greater takeoff distances when carrying substantial amounts of fuel for intercontinental routes (FTN News).

Airlines facing that constraint have three responses documented in the sources: cancel the service, substitute a smaller aircraft, or add a fuel stop along the way. Only some of them appear, and only for a handful of carriers.

Lufthansa Group is the clearest case on the record. It states that the reduced runway length prevents the operation of certain long-haul aircraft, and that its Frankfurt–Buenos Aires flights will be cancelled from Sunday, October 25, through Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Lufthansa Group).

Aerolíneas Argentinas, in a flight-policy page updated August 18, 2026, says it will keep its international schedule: Miami, Punta Cana, Cancún and Aruba without substantial changes, and Rome and Madrid with a technical stop in Río de Janeiro exclusively to refuel (Ticketya y Chasma).

Who cancels, who reroutes, and how firm that list is

The widest list of affected carriers comes from a secondary source. According to an October 6 operational review by Argentine aviation outlet Aviación News, cited by FTN News, the carriers planning to suspend direct Ezeiza operations include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, SWISS, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines (FTN News). No individual airline notice appears in the material, so the list reads as a schedule review — useful, but weaker evidence than a carrier's own statement, a contrast with Lufthansa Group's notice and Aerolíneas Argentinas' published plan.

What the $100 million-plus works buy besides a rebuilt runway

Aeropuertos Argentina is putting more than $100 million into the airport, covering airside infrastructure, passenger facilities and cargo capability (Airport Industry-News). The Ezeiza runway works are one piece of that package. The components described in the sources:

  • Platform Golf, a new apron providing parking and operating space for seven narrow-body aircraft.
  • A larger domestic arrivals area, expanded by 1,200 square meters, with five new boarding gates taking the total to 12 and a 3,500-square-meter pre-boarding zone.
  • Terminal technology, with the airline operations system fully replaced across more than 1,700 devices, including check-in computers and gate equipment (ACI-LAC).
  • A courier terminal, the 12,000-square-meter Terminal Única de Courrier, which appears in the August flight-policy page (Ticketya y Chasma) but not in the concessionaire description cited above.

What the 18-day window leaves open

Several questions stay unanswered. There is no total count of cancelled flights, no estimate of affected passengers and no figure for the economic cost of the restriction. None of the sources describes how passengers on cancelled services will be rebooked, rerouted or compensated, leaving airline announcements as the only documented reference. Whether courier and freight traffic is affected by the shortened runway goes unaddressed, even though cargo capability is part of the investment package.

Two investment figures also circulate for later years. One report describes a program running from 2027 to 2031, presented as $1,500 million in works, including a new arrivals terminal at Ezeiza and an expansion of Aeroparque; the same outlet cites $760 million between 2027 and 2031 for Ezeiza terminals and runways (TN). The reports do not clarify whether the smaller figure sits inside the larger one, or whether either overlaps with the current $100 million-plus package.

Financing is described only for the 2027–2031 program: the concessionaire together with a trust fund whose resources come from passengers' use of the facilities (TN). No source in the material says how the current works are paid for.

What remains concrete is the calendar. Whether the runway work finishes on November 11, 2026, as planned, and whether carriers restore full schedules immediately or rebuild them route by route afterward, are the two things travelers can actually watch.

Frequently asked questions

+Is Ezeiza airport closed between October 25 and November 11, 2026?

No. Ezeiza stays open for the whole period, but all operations move to runway 11-29, reduced to 1,850 meters from the usual 3,300, while secondary runway 17-35 is rehabilitated. The constraint is runway length, not access, and it is what forces airlines to cancel flights, swap in smaller aircraft or add fuel stops.

+Which airlines are cancelling flights to Buenos Aires?

Lufthansa Group states that its Frankfurt–Buenos Aires flights will be cancelled from October 25 to November 11, 2026. A list of carriers reported to suspend direct Ezeiza operations includes American Airlines, Delta, United, Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, KLM, SWISS, Emirates, Turkish and Ethiopian, based on an October 6 operational review cited by FTN News.

+Why can't large aircraft use a 1,850-meter runway?

Long-haul jets leave with fuel for many hours of flight, which adds weight and requires a longer takeoff roll. At 1,850 meters, the available distance falls short of what some widebody aircraft need at intercontinental fuel loads, so airlines cancel the route, substitute a smaller plane or insert a refueling stop in a neighboring country.

+What is Aeropuertos Argentina building at Ezeiza?

The current package exceeds $100 million and covers airside infrastructure, passenger facilities and cargo capability. It includes Platform Golf for seven narrow-body aircraft, a domestic arrivals expansion of 1,200 square meters with five new gates, a replacement of more than 1,700 terminal devices, and a 12,000-square-meter courier terminal reported in airline policy documents.
